El Prado is properly the most famous museum in Spain. It contains more than 18.000 paintings, sculptures and other pieces of art. Among the most popular artist in the museum are Velazquez and Goya which both have their finest paintings exposed in El Prado. It is also possible to find other important Spanish Artists such as el Greco and Zurbaran or paintings from all over Europe. The building of the museum is a masterpiece in itself. It was ordered build by Carlos III in 1875 and was designed by the architect Juan de Villanova.

Reina Sofia is the second great museum in Madrid. It contains more modern art and has two large sections dedicated to Picasso and Miro. In Reina Sofia you can also find important works of Dali, Juan Gris and Pablo Gargallo.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is located in the Palace Villahermosa.  It was until 1992 (where the Spanish Government bought the collection) one of the most important private collection in the world owned by the Thyssen family.  The museum contains more than 800 works of western art including important works of Rubens, Friedrich, Caravaggio and Dali.
